Logging Mega Miles and Trips for the TBC

Do tell us how you riders are logging so many miles and trips!! Tell us about an average day that would allow you to log 102 trips in 21 days. That's almost 5 bike trips a
day! We're also impressed with the next tier of riders who have logged more than 50 bike trips so far--and the infrequent riders are close behind you--the leader right now has logged 40 trips. Oh, and you leaders in the mileage contest? Over 500 miles!? Tell us about your commutes and your other utilitarian bike trips!

Mega miles...ha! Well there are many who do longer commutes but mine is a daily 12-13 mile bike ride that starts at home, goes to work, does a post office or errand run at lunch, goes to the gym after work then maybe a store stop before getting home 12 hours later. Counts as 1 round trip in the log. More importantly I've done zero car trips this month and only do maybe a dozen car trips a year : )
I'm really curious how people have over 500 miles as well. Do you live in Ventura and commute in? What's the deal? Your weekend rides around the world don't count!
Tiahaar has a good point... maybe there could be bonus points for each "zero car trips" day?
I'm also a little bummed by the "1 trip" tally system, since I'm considered a "frequent rider" for riding to work once a week. For the TBC, I've been riding lots more, adding trips for errands and meetings, and having days that are COMPLETELY CAR FREE! This rarely happened before!
Sure, virtue is its own reward, but I'm just inching along, 1 point at a time...with folks counting 5 rides a day???? No way.
I commute by bike from Ventura to UCSB for work. I'd have more miles, but I was gone June 4-10 on the AIDS/Lifecycle ride, and those miles don't count for TBC :-)
To those of you who are over 500 miles -- I applaud your consistent efforts. Keep on going -- you never know when I might pass out from exhaustion, and every day we ride there's one less car on the road.
See you out there!
Thanks for all of your great thoughts and feedback. This new contest has plenty of room for improvement so we certainly appreciate constructive feedback and ideas for how to improve future promotions.
Tiahaar--you should be logging more than one trip on the days you take the bike for a lunch trip. That would be one round trip to work and one round trip at lunch (2 rides). The trip chaining for the gym and errands after work indeed don't count for the TBC as it stands now.
If you have ideas about how to make the tracking better next year while not over-shadowing the infrequent riders, post them here!
Thanks again for your participation.
Anyone else noticed the top infrequent rider has 14 miles in 48 trips? That's about two blocks per ride...
It sounds like those riders choose not to log their rides every day, or they might have limited access to a computer. Many people wait and log a hand full of rides at once, instead of logging them every day. There is nothing in the TBC rules prohibiting that. Also, we have been working with some people because they have had some problems getting their logged rides to save on the calendar. Those people's issues seem to be resolved, so they are starting to show up on the boards. I know that I have spoken with a few of the individuals you listed. I hope this sheds some light on how that could happen.
Thank!
I think that it is VERY important to bring this to everyone's attention.
I printed a copy of the infrequent rider individual trips list two days ago so I could show my team members. I find it VERY suspicious that someone who had 21 trips logged two days ago, now has 71. (I'm referring to the infrequent riders)So in two days, this person made 30 trips. You must be exhausted by now.
I know I'm not going to win the trips contest and I'm not going to lie about the number of trips I've taken in order to do so.
Well, like they said, not everyone logs their rides every day. I have had trouble getting my rides to save, so now that I got it fixed, more rides will show for me. I hope people don't suspect me of cheating.
I'm a frequent rider so only one trip each day counts so that's all I will enter.
That's all I would do anyway. I mean, rational normal people combine their trips whenever possible.
For example, I'll stop off at the store and the pharmacy on my way home, but that's only one trip. I would never go home first and then go out to the pharmacy and the store. The pharmacy would close before I even got home.
The other day I went downtown to do some shopping. I probably rode up and down State street 3 or 4 times. I also went to the Home Improvement Center twice. But that was all on a single trip. No way am I going to go home between each stop so I can count extra trips. I live on a big giant hill!
Also, I already live downtown, so any trips I do aren't going to be very far because I don't have to go far to get anywhere I need to go.
But I plod along with my one trip each day for 17 miles (8.5 miles each way to work) and I'm doing all right. I can't compete with anybody who lives in Ventura and rides to UCSB. I simply have nothing to do so far away.
As we are getting close to the end of the month I notice that the 3 top mileage riders are within 10 miles with 700+ each. Congrats to you guys! I suggest the $100 be split among these top three since they are so close. For the record I am in the top 10 but no chance of catching these guys!
I only just found this blog, but I guess I am doing well for the infrequent riders section. I didn't even know there was more then one contest, I signed up at work and thought this was another cute way to lose weight and get in shape. I take lots of small trips (2 mile) with my son and use it as a bonding experiance, also since I mostly work at home I take a small trip every hour or two to check the mail, which is one mile away, or to go to the store. I whish this was ongoing so that I might keep this up. I've lost 5 Lbs and can so use to loose another 20!
I got a 160$ ticket for running the stop sign turning right onto state from constance. That should be a yield sign (State becomes 2 lane at that intersection). Thanks SBPD for your support. Yesterday I rode all the way downtown from the far side of Ellwood to fight the ticket...I got the extra miles, but these dogs are tired. I can't wait til this is over so I can drive a day or so per week.
I can't imagine commuting from Ventura on a bike. Good god.
In reading everyone's comments and doing some thinking I am coming to the conclusion that THE GOAL should not be to maximize bike miles, but to minimize car miles. Maybe we should enter our car odometer reading at the start of the month and the end and see who has the fewest. People without cars are automatic winners.
the odometer thing wouldn't work too well because some people share their vehicle. My boyfriend and I share a car right now and I'm minimizing my usuage of the car by riding. We have different schedules so I would go at lunch, pick him up then he would drop me off. I'm eliminating several trips back and forth but it's not really quantifiable.
I have been having issues logging in for the last couple of days, anyone else? Maybe there is more internet traffic because everyone is catching up with their logging?
Cool, we can keep logging rides in July! I am so excited, I hope they keep this up through the year.
