Road Hazards for Bicyclists

Help alert fellow bicyclists and staff in your local jurisdictions about hazards to bicyclists out on the road. You are the eyes and ears out there for staff and you can be of great help to them if you identify hazards and describe the location and type of hazard in productive ways. Discuss problems/hazards here and Traffic Solutions staff will help you get in touch with the appropriate staff person in your local jursidiction. The more specific you can be, the better. We also encourage you to stay positive in your comments and remember that staff sincerely want all road users to stay safe out on the road--you can help them! (photo courtesy of C. Orr)

A guy on our team crashed into another bike this weekend on the blind turn after the bike bridge before Puente going North on the Obern path. He is out for the month with a hurt shoulder and broken finger. I turns out the sister of another team member crashed in the same spot awhile back. Way too much of a coincidence. This is a very dangerous spot. Some bushes should probably be cut back and people need to sloooow down. The paths are much more dangerous than they may appear. This is especially true with all the people on them this summer.
The intersection of Patterson and Hollister has been rebuilt and aligned all the way around EXCEPT going east on Hollister...where the roadway pinches down and there is no bike lane. Just beyond the pinch it opens up again, and the "new" wide bridge has been there for over 15 years! What is the holdup? Cottage Hospital just recently purchased that corner of land, could it be that now finally the county and Cottage can work out the right-of-way issues and get that stretch of roadway realigned?
P.S. about the bike path bridges: folks its single file and keep right Especially over the bike lane bridges. I always see bike riders cutting across into the other lane turning off those bridges and riding double taking up both lanes. Please ride responsibly.
I was riding to work the other day and noticed that my roadway was constantly being infringed upon by cars! They kept zooming around behind me and in front of me. Some drivers even had the nerve to abandon an empty car on the side of the road!
What happened to the days of kids playing stickball in the street? Biking would be much safer if we could simply get cars off of the road. I mean, really, since when was this huge public space designated as the right of those who can afford to abuse energy?
Bikers Unite, Take back the streets for the use of all citizens!
Try surviving Ortega Hill Road every day! I'm glad they're putting in a bypass. I will probably use it, but then I'll have to double back and go up the back side from Summerland anyway since I work at the very top of the hill.
But man oh man. I've tried EVERYTHING to survive this daily ordeal. I've tried hugging the side but then semis with tractor trailers nearly run me over with the rear wheels. I've tried riding down the center but people (even a police car!) pass me on blind curves. They pass me going DOWN the hill as well as up.
Something has to be done with how crappy people drive.
Glass in the bike lanes:
Eastbound Calle Real, after CHP offices and before La Patera.
Eastbound Calle Real, across from Couny Hospital/VA buildings. Stretches for hundred yards.
Westbound Calle Real, across from County Health, just before last road before the empty field. Blue Glass, been there for a month.
Other dangerous conditions:
Dangerous storm drains covering the bike lane (2x), Eastbound Calle Real just after Hwy 154.
Dangerous storm drains (2x) covering bike lane, Westbound Calle Real, just after hwy 154.
Stretch of bike lane on eastbound Calle Real from Hwy 154 to State Street - Plants need to be trimmed so cyclists can stay in the bike lane.
Eastbound Hollister St, just past Modoc. LOTS of sand piles up in the bike lane under the train bridge.
Traffic Light bike sensors/buttons needed:
EB Calle Real, Hwy 154 intersection.
North Goleta Route - crossings with Patterson and Fairview.
Calle Real, turning onto State St.
On a positive note many thanks for the road work on Hollister by the airport that gave a bit more room in the bike lanes when they were painted on...expecially nice going by the Raytheon EW building where the lane used to be really skinny.
