How to Bike With Kids

Many of you regular riders out there have families and that means that you also have experience biking with your children. Tell us how you handle biking with small children and how you bike with your kids once they are big enough to ride their own bikes. What kinds of trailers or seats do you use? Do you ride out on the streets? How did you teach your children about the rules of the road? What lessons have you learned that you can share with parents who have not yet tried riding bikes for transportation with their children?

I'm a big believer in Tag-a-longs as in the picture. It is not tough to teach a kid to ride a two wheeler at 4 or 5 as I did, but in hindsight it is not wise because their judgement is not developed. My son riding solo soon had a minor run in with a non-moving object and I was instantly converted to the world of Tag-a-longs, trailers and tandems. I didn't let my son ride this own bike again until he logged thousands of miles behind me on the tag-a-long learning the rules of engagement with cars, how to "read" drivers, and use hand signals. At 10 he is now very confortable in traffic on his own. His 8 year old brother is still either on the tag-a-long or the back of our family tandem. My 5 year old rides in his caboose (trailer) with his books and toys.
